I wonder how to handle with hard and soft bounces in SFMC to maintain high deliverability and engagement without losing communication opportunities with clients.

Current Strategy

  • Hard Bounces: I currently add all hard bounces to an Auto-Suppression List to prevent further sending attempts. However, in cases where email is the only channel of communication, this means losing all contact with the client. Are there better approaches to managing hard bounces while trying to recover or verify invalid email addresses? Soft Bounces:

  • Soft bounces, I monitor them for recurring issues. I'm considering adding soft bounces to an Auto-Suppression List temporarily (e.g., for 1-2 months) if they repeatedly bounce. Is this a good approach? How do others handle soft bounces effectively?

Questions:

  1. What are the best practices for managing hard bounces in SFMC? Should I try to verify invalid addresses through other channels, or is there another way to recover them in an email-only communication scenario?
  2. How should soft bounces be handled? Should they be temporarily suppressed, and if so, for how long? Are there other strategies to re-engage or verify soft bounce contacts?
  3. Are there tools, processes, or automation workflows in SFMC that can help manage these situations more effectively?

  • "Bounce" is a transient delivery status in SFMC and should be treated as such, IMO. Yes, even hard bounces. Let the platform work for you and take any conclusions from ent._Subscribers.Status, not per email send attempt. I've seen so much money wasted trying to out-think SFMC's proven delivery capabilities. Commented Nov 18 at 19:59
