This tag is for questions related to the "Lightning Experience" which comprises a number of elements around a new user interface on the Salesforce platform. The underlying technology behind Lightning as used on the platform is Aura Framework which is an open-source JavaScript-based UI framework built by Salesforce for developing dynamic web apps for mobile and desktop devices. While Lightning can still be used in a server-side MVC environment, it is primarily a MV UI where the Controller is JavaScript-based, operating from the user's browser.
Lightning Pages are single-page applications that replace existing Visualforce-based multi-page applications and their tabs. They also include Lighting Components for portions of their functionality. They are served from a Lightning server instead of a Visualforce server and can contain Visualforce wrapped in an I-frame. Additionally, there's the Salesforce Lightning Design System [SLDS] which is a flexi-page layout scheme with its own CSS markup. Further, Salesforce has "re-branded" its edition offerings and named them Lightning Editions for all the various packages.
