I found myself revisiting my own question and answer, because after three years I was wondering why I had chosen this solution. I have found a better way. I created two text formulas on Activity: WhatId__c = WhatId and WhoId__c = WhoId This lets you use the values of WhatId and WhoId, without the (in my view) stupid restriction by Salesforce.
