My background is software development. I am very new to Salesforce. I have a task to channel HR data that contains employee information to an external entity that uses Salesforce Lightning using the REST API. Is there a standard set of objects within Salesforce that maintains the HR data (something like an HR module) or do I need to create custom objects within Salesforce?

If you are experienced with Salesforce and is asked to "upload employee data" to it using REST API what steps will you undertake?

Contact is a good object to start with.

I would ask the people who tasked you with this if they have proper documentation on how the data is structured on Salesforce. They should provide you with the "target" of your integration that will be using the platform's API. Nov 25 at 1:17
  • Tbh you need to ask some questions. Employee data might be: Contacts, Leads or Users. It might also be custom objects (think tables in a SQL db) that are installed by some third party package they may be using. If I was asked to upload employee data I would ask how they want it structured. Further, there is a difference between upload and channel - two words you seem to use interchangeably. There are a couple of GUI data upload options when it comes to Salesforce, and channel implies some kind of periodic sync where there are options also.
