In VS Code, I performed these steps:

  1. Ran the command 'SFDX: Create Project with Manifest'.
  2. Ran the command 'SFDX: Authorize an Org' and authorized the org.
  3. Right-clicked the package.xml file and clicked ' SFDX: Retrieve Source in Manifest from Org'.

After step 3 was completed, the output displayed this-

Starting SFDX: Retrieve Source from Org

I tried by changing version in package.xml from 51.0 to 50.0 and retrieving single helper class from package.xml and also I removed other components from package.xml in case if there is large number of files, creating this issue. Also I restarted the vscode after the changes I made but that also didn't work.

If anyone has other approach or resolution apart from whatever I already tried please help.

I have also faced this issue sometimes. check your internet connection. I changed my connection and it worked.

If that doesn't works then use the cloud icon on the left most panel and try to retrieve the components from there.

Hope it helps
