There is a database extension in salesforce marketing cloud that I need to export from the automation. I didn't create the DE and am unsure how to export it for use outside of salesforce marketing cloud. It is from a SQL query. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

You'll need one of two type of Data Extract Activity provisioned to your account by Support:

  1. Data Extension Extract
  2. Data Extension Extract with File Encoding and gzip

I'd recommend the latter of the two extract types as many (most) external applications misinterpret the archaic UCS-2 file encoding of the standard Data Extension Extract.

The steps to then include in your Automation to extract data from your Data Extension are as follows:

Step 1. SQL Query Activity that populates your Data Extension

Step 2. Data Extract Activity using one of the two extract types (take care that both require the External Key of your DE and not the name of the DE)

Step 3. File Transfer Activity. Move the file created by Step 2 from the Safehouse to your Enhanced FTP or other File Location

  • Macca, thank you for your response. I have tried both but keep getting an error on the data extract step. perhaps I could send a screenshot. I am stumped and could really use the help! Thank you, Jenn – Jennifer Luby Jun 22 '20 at 19:57
  • Sure. Feel free to add screenshots of how your Data Extract is configured. Do you get anything useful from the error message? Are you using the name of the Data Extension, rather than the External Key? – Macca Jun 23 '20 at 0:00

  • It looks like I cannot add screenshots into the comments so I will put another question with screenshots and tag you in it. Thank you. – Jennifer Luby Jun 24 '20 at 12:38
