I am struggling to understand what a particular Action (or is it an Action?) is.

  1. It appears next to the Post, Poll, Ask a Question for Case object in the Lightning Experience and its label is Update Case.
  2. Its name is Case._LightningUpdateCase as can be seen from hover under Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Actions in the Case Page Layout editor.
  3. It is a Quick Action as I can see it to be one when I hover the mouse in the Page Layout Editor over that component.
  4. I can not from Case > Buttons, Links and Actions see ANYTHING with that Label or that Developer name.
  5. It, on being clicked, gives a nice form to update a case.

I will be grateful if someone helps me understand this.

As I can see, Update case is a quick action which is added to the layout in Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Actions section.

A quick action can be of different type but in your case, it seems of update a record type.

As it is coming in Feed tab, You have enabled feed tracking on case object. If you disable the feed tracking for the case object, It will come to top right-hand side button list on record detail page.

Salesforce clearly mention this point in there documentation:-

Actions on user profiles, cases, and work orders can appear in a different way than on other records.

When feed tracking is enabled for cases or work orders, the page-level action menu on those records contains only custom buttons and supported standard buttons. Quick actions appear on the Chatter tab.

Reference:- Actions in Lightning Experience

Update:- Actions are of two types in salesforce.

  1. Object-Specific Actions:- Object-specific actions let users quickly create or update records, log calls, send emails, and more, in the context of a particular object.

step to finding object specific action:->>> setup-->> Object manager-->> select the object-->> button links and action

  1. Global Quick Actions:- You can add global quick actions to almost any page that supports actions. Use global actions to let users log call details, create or update records, or send email, all without leaving the page they’re on. Global create actions enable users to create object records, but the new record has no direct relationship with other records. e.g:- Send Email, Log a Call etc.

step to find all the global action:-

  • From Setup, enter Actions in the Quick Find box, then select Global Actions.

Read more about them here:-

  1. Object-Specific Actions
  2. Global Quick Actions

So in your case, If it is not available in object's Buttons, Links, and Actions, then check for global action from the setup menu.

  • Thanks for taking the time to answer. Can you please point me where I can get a list of all Quick Actions for a particular object (in this example Case)? Also, is then Update Case is a "Standard" Quick Action? As far as I knew Lightning Quick Actions are Custom Actions. – SFDC Dev 27 Oct 22 '18 at 13:59
  • The bit about Actions appearing in Feed tab I am aware but actually my question is where do I get to see the source of this particular quick action. It isn't in Buttons, Links, Actions pane so can't be Custom Functionality. So going by what you say the "Update Case" label is also completely Standard, and we can't change it right? And there is no way to customize the fields in that update form, correct? – SFDC Dev 27 Oct 22 '18 at 14:03
  • All quick action which you have created will be available in Buttons, Links, and Actions on an object. In lightning path will be:- setup-->edit object-->Buttons, Links, and Actions. Check my update in answer. – sanket kumar Oct 22 '18 at 14:09
  • Thanks again for the time taken to reply. I have now checked Global Actions list too but it isn't anywhere. Very odd and if it were possible I would have shared screenshots of both global and case specific action views:( – SFDC Dev 27 Oct 23 '18 at 10:33
