I have a general question on journey builder and Email sends.

If we have e,g, a publication list where we have subscribers email address with multiple Subscriber keys.

I understand that Journey builder will pick one sub.key and skip the others. Based on what rule is Journey Builder deciding which subscriber key gets the email?

Secondly what happens if one subscriber key is unsubscribed?

For Journey Builder the subscriber / contact key is what is used to insert a record into journey builder. If this key is not the email address depending on where and how your data is stored that could mean 2 records with the same email address can be in the journey at the same time, meaning an email activity could be sent to the same email multiple times.

Unsubscribes by default are based on the subscriber / contact key not on the email address itself. (provided the subscriber key is different from the email address)

  • Example 1 is correct. In example 2 it would send the email twice to the same email address. – Travis Naughton Oct 2 '18 at 10:08
  • thank you. I assumed that it will check the duplicate email address regardless from Subscriber key. Is there any workaround for example 2 so that we send only one email out even if sub.key is different but email is same? – Werner Holm Oct 2 '18 at 11:39
