When I click the preview button for any lightning component in my sandbox I get a page which says

We are down for maintenance.

Sorry for the inconvenience. We'll be back shortly.

This also happens when I click "New" on the Lightning App Builder.

There is no error in my log files. It does not even generate a log file. It is almost as if my .lightning.force.com site is messed up somehow.

I don't think there is anything wrong with our components.

I can view the Lightning Components on our community site. And I can create a new blank application which should just show a blank screen when I click preview, and I still get the error.

Another thing I noticed before I get the down for maintenance message, I get a TON of 302 redirects. Redirects

This is the url request by the end of all the redirects. enter image description here

This is a full sandbox, with lots of development work in it which has not yet been deployed. A few months ago Salesforce restored this sandbox from a backup for us as well.

It is very possible that this is an internal SFDC message. Why would you think there is something wrong with your component? Have you opened a case? – Sebastian Kessel Jul 21 '17 at 20:26
  • I don't think there is anything wrong with my components. The error happens even if I create an empty app and click preview. I think I am going to open a case if no one on here has ever ran into this issue. – Chris Mullins Jul 21 '17 at 20:52

Did you checked server status at trust.salesforce.com this is an internal salesforce issue – Avijit Chakraborty Jul 22 '17 at 2:21

Internal server errors indicate that an error has occurred and hasn't been caught by the platform such as a low-level java exception.

I would suggest you raise this with Salesforce support.

In the meantime, this article could help you better handle this error on the client side in your lightning component.
