I am attempting to create a dependent picklist. I have already watched some tutorial videos and got to the point where my picklist has been created, but the selection box is grayed out, and I am unable to use the field.

-I have gotten to the point where I entered in the picklist dropdown values when creating.

How can I troubleshoot this to figure out what is not working?

Add controlling picklist on your VF page. Since Prospect is dependent on other picklist. You need to select any value from controlling picklist and based on chosen value, Prospect picklist will show some values which are specified in field depencies. – Rohit Mourya May 4 '17 at 13:15
  • How do you add a controlling picklist on your VF page? Do you go to App Setup > Visualforce Compnents? Then what? – Chris May 4 '17 at 13:58
  • If you're using standard detail page then edit page layout add that field and if you're using VF page then you need to add code for that field. – Rohit Mourya May 4 '17 at 14:00
  • I've had yet to use VF to develop anything. Learning more about how to implement code there. I am not sure what you mean when you say standard detail page. I try and go to the page layout under the object this is on but when I come to the 'Page Layout Assignment' and I have no idea if I'm in the right place or not. Do you have any screenshots to show what you mean by this? – Chris May 4 '17 at 14:08
  • wait I'll post it as answer – Rohit Mourya May 4 '17 at 14:08

In Salesforce, Picklist fields can be either controlling or dependent fields. A controlling field controls the available values in one or more corresponding dependent fields. A dependent field displays values based on the value selected in its corresponding controlling field.

For example, I've a custom object called as Expense__c. In that I've two picklist called as Controlling Picklist and Dependent Picklist. Controlling Picklist controls the values which are suppose to be show in dependent one.

Now if I try to include dependent picklist on page layout, it won't show any values since it's controlling parent is not available to select. So whenever you're working with these kinds of picklist, make sure you're including it's controlling picklist as well.

To do that, Go to Setup-> Search "Object" in quick find -> Select targer object -> find page layout -> edit -> Find controlling picklist -> drag it in page section -> save it.

When I select the "account" page layout it brings me to here. I am unable to see any field for a controlling picklist. Is this because the field is a custom field? I attached a screenshot below of what I am seeing. The "Controlling Picklist" is not an option. "Prospect" (shown in image) is grayed out, but that is the dependent picklist I am hoping to create. So when someone selects prospect in the dropdown menu, they are able to specify which type of prospect it is. enter image description here

  • Controlling Picklist was present in my org. In your org it might be something else. Go to your object definition and find out Controlling picklist for Prospect. Refer snapshot of two fields in my answer. And I would suggest you to refer those links in my answer. Since you're new to Salesforce environment, it would be useful in future too. – Rohit Mourya May 5 '17 at 4:43

Field dependency

You have to make sure that you are including the values you have from the dependent picklist, as the controlling field decides what will happen to your field dependency values.

Also make sure that the Controlling field is present on the page layout.
