I have two custom objects in a master detail relationship. Credit Applications are the parent, and Credit Decisions are the child. There are multiple record types and page layouts of each object for different offices.

When creating a new Credit Decision from its respective related list on its parent Credit Application, Salesforce defaults to the wrong Credit Decision Record Type, resulting in the wrong page layout for my users.

Is there any way to change the default record type created from a related list that isn't based on profile?

  • My suggestion is to go for visual force page.If you don't want to change in profile level access @JJ Harry – Pavan tej May 13 '16 at 15:02

Depending on your use scenario, you might want to use process builder. If you have some field on Applications that would determine the page layout, you can have that determine the record type of Decisions on create.

  • This could be an option. So to make sure I understand, if the Credit Application was of record type "X" that could determine the record type of the child Credit Decision? Are there any implications with using the process building vs a workflow? There will be several thousand of these manually created in the months after deployment, and I don't want to hit a governor limit. – JJ Harry May 13 '16 at 15:13
  • Honestly I am not too familiar with limits, so that may be another question for some of the power users. Also, I don't think it HAS to be the page layout of the parent that defines the child. It could be any field, really. – Chance May 13 '16 at 15:20
