Here is the usecase: I have a rails based app which has powerful segmentation capability, this is much more useful than what's provided by ExacttTarget. Here is what I am looking to do:

  1. Create a list in exacttarget
  2. bulk upload the list of users in that list.
  3. Create email in exacttarget.
  4. Use exacttarget to send that email to the subscribers to the of the list I just created.

All this will be done using the API/Fuel SDK. I have figured out point #1,#3 & #4 but still looking how to efficiently do #2. Found an API which add subscribers to the list but its does it one by one. so wondering if is there is to do this in bulk?

You'd want to FTP the file an ET Enhanced FTP site if the batch size is large.

From there, you can utilize Import Activities to import from FTP into a Data Extension.

Next, you can create an Email Send Definition that points to the email and audience in question.

To make things simpler, you can create all of this in the app, wrap it up in an automation or program, then just start the automation whenever you'd like to upload and send.

  • Thanks for your answer, David. Do you know how to use the API to create the Import Activity configuration? An Import Activity is limited to a single Subscriber List, so I'd need to create one per each list in order your approach to work. – Ben Jul 15 '16 at 20:35
  • Actually, I may have just found the answer: code.exacttarget.com/apis-sdks/soap-api/… – Ben Jul 15 '16 at 20:37
