Need your help with some basic questions around Triggered Send feature of SFMC. I went through the documentation but there is still some doubts in my mind -

  1. While creating a Triggered email interaction (Triggered Send Definition), we specify the list and the Triggered Send DE. What is the exact purpose of these two? Why do we need these?

  2. I have a data extension which is being populated through REST API. Now, I want to send/trigger email to a subscriber as soon as it is added to this data extension. The data extension and its loading setup already exists. I just need to implement the email sending logic. How can I accomplish this?

Please advise. Thanks!

For #1, the attributes you send in the Triggered Send API call will get added or updated in the List or Data Extension you specify. For example, if you pass a FirstName attribute in your API and your Triggered Data Extension has a FirstName column, it's value in the API call will get recorded just before the email is sent. Same goes for List membership and Subscriber Attributes. If you have a FirstName Profile Attribute, the value will get updated and the Subscriber will be added to the List specified.

Regarding #2, there's no need to do two API calls if all you'd like to do is record the values passed along and trigger an email. The TSD with a Data Extension specified will do that for you -- in a single API call.

  • Thanks Adam! #1 is pretty clear now. Thanks again! Regarding #2, let me explain the exact scenario - We have a 3rd party marketing vendor who is sending us leads/subscribers .. They have set up a mechanism using REST API via which they are loading subscribers directly into the ET data extension .. Now what we need to do is - as soon as a subscriber comes into this DE, we need to send a welcome email to him/her Is it something that the marketing vendor has to code on their side while loading into DE or I have to do? – Maneesh Jan 6 '16 at 14:55

There's not any way to do that in real-time. You could create an Automation on a quick interval that filters for new DE rows and then sends a User-Initiated Send. – Adam Spriggs Jan 6 '16 at 15:01
  • Do you think Journey Builder can help us here? – Maneesh Jan 6 '16 at 15:03

Perhaps. You can certainly fire off an email activity in JB when a new DE row is added. It'd be hourly, not realtime -- at least the way I understand it. – Adam Spriggs Jan 6 '16 at 16:54
  • I am surprised to see why JB allows only till hourly .. It should be instantaneous.. nobody will wait for 1 hour to get a welcome email or password rest email :) – Maneesh Jan 7 '16 at 16:24
