Your error is not due to an sql error it is due to the fact that the returned records cannot be directly assigned to a map. You need to use a for(Object a : query) map.put(key,a); to populate the map instead of the map xxx = New Mapxxx([Query]);

@ChristianDeckert the purpose in this instance is to map all the CampaignMembers effected by ContactId's touched when Quotes are updated by their Campaign. So the end result looks something like Map<CampaignId>,List<CampaignMember>>
